When Ola Miller decided to move to her family’s farm, she bought a manufactured home rather than building a house. That’s how she learned how easy it was to upgrade to a more energy efficient manufactured home through her electric co-op.

Miller is among the many Kentuckians who are taking advantage of the ENERGY STAR Manufactured Home program. Participants automatically get a better quality ENERGY STAR certified home that is much more comfortable and less expensive to heat and cool.

It’s available from Blue Grass Energy, Kentucky’s Touchstone Energy Cooperatives and a wide range of participating mobile home dealers. In most cases, the program is free at participating dealers.

“I got the energy upgrades for free, plus I’m saving money on my electric bill every month,” Miller said. The retiree purchased her home from Clayton Homes in London last summer.

Clayton custom manufactures homes are upgraded to ENERGY STAR certification. They include a high-efficiency heat pump, better insulation and other construction features that improve energy efficiency.

“These homes have about 25 percent more insulation than our basic models,” said Jim Evans, who sold Miller her home. “They are the best-built, most energy-efficient, homes on the market.”

“This is such a great deal for co-op members looking to buy a manufactured home,” he added. “I try to tell every customer about it.”
