In the smartphone age, we are more connected than ever, and at times connected when we shouldn’t be: behind the wheel.

Activities like texting, talking on the phone and scrolling social media take attention off the road.

Inattentive drivers have hit poles, guy wires and even pad mounted transformers, causing members to lose power.

This puts the driver, pedestrians and other drivers at risk of serious injury or death. It also could cause a major power outage.

We all think it will never happen to us, but it can, and in an instant.

Remember, if you do hit electrical equipment, don’t exit the vehicle. Call 911 and wait for utility crews to de-energize the power. If you must exit, do it safely. This video will explain how to safely leave the vehicle.
