Meet Mr. Woody Sparks.
The eighty-one year old veteran was born in Garrard County and is now a Blue Grass Energy member in Jessamine County.
He served in the Air Force as a Jet Mechanic during the Korean War and held the rank of Airman First Class.
At age 16, he had his parents permission to join the service. After attending boot camp in San Antonio and mechanic school in California, he was stationed in Alaska. Sparks shared with us just how homesick he was when he first left home. It was the first time he had ever been away and he said, "I would have given $1 million to come home!"
Some of his most memorable times were surviving numerous earthquakes and the volume of snow in Alaska.
Upon his discharge from the Air Force, he hitchhiked home from California.
We are sponsoring Mr. Sparks on the Sept. 21 Honor Flight, leaving from Blue Grass Airport in Lexington. We invite everyone to attend the Welcome Home ceremony at 7:30 p.m. back at the airport.
