Despite the forecast, a large crowd attends annual meeting
On Thursday, June 2, Blue Grass Energy welcomed a crowd of 643 members and their families to the cooperative’s 79th annual meeting, held at the Keeneland Entertainment Barn in Lexington, Kentucky.
The crowd of of nearly 1,500 was treated to a meeting geared towards families with several children’s activities which varied from bounce houses to video games.
Entertainment included Bingo for everyone—with members winning over $1,000 in prizes. A meal of BBQ and hot dogs with all the trimmings was provided to all in attendance prior to the business meeting.
Multiple exhibits were on hand. They represented wide-ranging topics from energy efficiency to information on Kentucky State Parks.
Just before the business meeting, Bro. Noel Cotton of Alton Christian Church in Lawrenceburg gave the invocation, and Vance Drakeford of Nicholasville performed the National Anthem after the presentation of colors by Boy Scout Troop #22.
During the business meeting, Dennis Moneyhon, chairman of Blue Grass Energy’s board of directors, spoke to the crowd. He talked about serving the members.
“We know you depend on us, and we take serving you and representing your interest seriously.” Said Moneyhon. “In our position of servant leaders, we continue to focus on controlling expenses to keep your rates as low as possible.”
Director and Board Secretary-Treasurer Jane Smith presented the treasurer’s report then entertained and accepted a motion to dispense with the reading of the 2015 minutes.
Cooperative attorney, Howard Downing performed the installation of the slate of re-elected directors. They were:
- Dennis Moneyhon – District 8
President and CEO Mike Williams also addressed the membership. Williams gave a report focusing on the foundational purpose of Blue Grass Energy.
“Making life better, the cooperative way is the foundation that supports your cooperative.” said Williams. “We know we exist for one reason and that is to serve you.”
Mike McNalley, East Kentucky Power’s Executive Vice-President and CFO, gave a short brief on the operations of the cooperative’s power supplier.
He was followed by Chris Perry, President and CEO of the Kentucky Association of Electric Cooperatives. Perry presented the Governor’s Safety and Health No Loss Time Award to the cooperative for working 411,242 hours without a lost time accident.
Blue Grass Energy awarded $10,000 in scholarships at the event. Following the business meeting, ten high school graduates, served by Blue Grass Energy, were recognized as this year’s scholarship recipients. They each received a $1,000 scholarship from the co-op.
The 2015 scholarship winners are:

- Amelia Bolin – Harrison County High School
- Jacob Burdine – East Jessamine High School
- Abigail Cain – East Jessamine High School
- Mary Crump – Bourbon County High School
- Benjamin Eipert – Madison Southern High School
- Mary Furnish - Harrison County High School
- Emily Hamilton – Mercer County High School
- Samantha McGehee – Henry Clay High School
- Aaron Ransdell – Tates Creek High School
An eleventh scholarship was awarded to Rebecca Kinder of Western Hills High School. This was funded by Ron Sheets, former President and CEO of the Kentucky Association of Electric Cooperatives and long-time member of Blue Grass Energy.
Ten additional students were also recognized for being selected to attend the cooperative’s Washington Youth Tour.

- Hayden Knight – Berea
- Meghan Nevels – Harrodsburg
- Eliza Lavin – Versailles
- Sophia Sutherland – Wilmore
- Kerrigan Welch – Nicholasville
- Kassidy Williams – Nicholasville
The cooperative also had the third annual silent auction benefiting their 2016 charities—God’s Food Pantry Food Bank and the Harrison County Food Pantry. There were 40 items that raised $2,300.
At the conclusion of the meeting, names were drawn for a variety of prizes for all ages.
